Debian Server Install

Debian Server Install
Hyprland on Debian SID

My preferred Linux distribution is Debian, and I have recently experimented with Debian Unstable, also known as SID. Instead of selecting one of the many desktop environments, I have been wanting to familiarize myself with Hyprland to see what all the HYP is about ;-)

I was able to get Hyprland working on my LG Gram. I initially attempted to set it up in Arch Linux, but the process failed, and I struggled to find a solution within a reasonable timeframe. The Arch installation went just fine, but the system froze when starting Hyprland. The only reason I started with Arch Linux was that it was reportedly easier and more compatible. I didn't spend a lot of time investigating the issue, as I was primarily interested in checking out Hyprland and not in figuring out how to install it on Arch Linux.

The Hyperland install worked just fine on the LG Gram with Debian Server and no DE. So well, in fact, that I tried with another laptop I sometimes take out of the house. This is an even older Lenovo Flex 14. The idea is that I really want to see if I even like a tiling window manager at all, and I want to be on Wayland because I live in the present. Okay, that's a dig at the whole X vs. W debate, but it's really in jest. I don't have enough information to form an informed opinion on the matter.

The point is that when installing Debian Server on the Flex 14, the internet did not work after rebooting into the install. I actually installed it three times, once with GNOME, which worked just fine. Why, when installing Debian with no DE on the Flex 14, did I not have internet?

All the searches were pointing to Network Manager or the /etc/network/interfaces file, or other related items, but there was no solution in those areas. The Network Manager was not found, but the WiFi device had all the necessary settings to connect in the interfaces file. Strange.

Eventually, I was pointed to the following page, which inspired me to type:

sudo ifup wlp1s0

https://wiki.debian.org/NetworkConfiguration

wlp1s0 is the device name of my Wifi card. I knew this because it was listed in the interfaces file.

This simple command brought the WiFi adapter online with an internet connection. I learn something new every day. It seems so obvious now, but only the last of my searches ever mentioned this command. In fact, most had me typing commands that I was familiar with but that were not found on the system, including 'network-manager' or 'NetworkManager' (it turns out it can be either one or the other).

Now I am editing sources and installing software like an absolute Linux noob again. I wanted to place this here for future reference. I hope it comes up in my search the next time, cause I'll be looking for it. Okay, maybe you will too.
